Eco-Friendly CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzer Helps Verify Copper Removal from Industrial Wastewater

Anaheim, CA—June 24, 2019—With its adjustable cycle time that minimizes costly reagent use and low maintenance, process engineers tasked with treating industrial wastewater containing copper (Cu) will find the precision CA-6 Colorimetric Copper Analyzer from  Electro-Chemical Devices (ECD) helps them protect valuable water resources.

ECD’s CA-6 Copper Analyzer is an on-line sequential sampling analyzer. It automatically performs a controlled sequence of sampling, analysis and then results processing is performed and repeated using colorimetric methods. The colorimetric method of water analysis relies on an LED light source and a heated colorimetric cell, which has been designed for measuring trace amounts of Cu in water.

The CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzer measures Cu using the differential photometric absorbance bathocuproine method.  The copper (I) ions form an orange-colored complex with the bathocuproine in a buffered solution at pH 4,5. Any copper (II) ions present in the water sample are previously reduced to copper (I) ions before the complex is formed. The absorbance intensity is proportional to the silica concentration in the sample and is determined at 470 nm.

The versatile CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzer can be configured to measure copper or a wide range of other substances with a choice of multiple parameters:  ppb, ppm and mg/L.  It measures copper over a wide range depending on the cell size chosen–from trace levels of 0.05 to 1 mg/L (26 mm cell) 0,1 to 3 mg/L (16 mm cell) up to 150 mg/L with internal dilution.   It is highly dependable too, with reproducibility also based on the cell size: (1) ±20 ppb or ±5%, whichever is greater (26 mm cell) or (2) ±50 ppb ±5%, whichever is greater (16 mm cell).

Highly efficient for a low cost of ownership, the CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzer features low reagent consumption to lower operating costs, reduce special storage and disposal costs of reagents and minimize technician maintenance labor time.  The CA-6 consumes only 1L (0.26 US gal) R1, R2 and 2L (0.53 US gal) R3 for the 16 mm cell /2L (0.53 US gal) R1, R2 and 4L (1.06 US gal) R3 for the 26 mm cell of each reagent every 30 days with 15 minute analysis frequency.

The CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzer is equipped with a graphic touchscreen interface showing measured values and status information. It provides users with easy access to menus and functions in multiple languages. There is an integrated data logger onboard with USB download capability for history tracking.

Outputs provided with the CA-6 Analyzer include two 4-20 mA outputs for measured data, and it also includes a Modbus compatible RS485 RTU.  Four programmable SPDT relays are available to provide alarm capability.

The CA-6 Colorimetric Analyzers is designed with two compartments that separate critical electronics from the wet process.  The standard model is recommended for indoor use and rated NEMA IP54 for dust and water ingress.  The operating temperature range of the CA-6 Analyzer is 41 to 113 °F (5 to 45 °C).

The manufacture of electrical wiring, electronic devices and components, metals plating and processing, motors, sensors and even performance fabrics are some of the many industrial uses of copper (Cu). There are several processes available to remove heavy metals such as Cu from wastewater, which involve technologies such as adsorption, anaerobic treatment, membrane filtration, cementation and electro-dialysis.

All of the copper abatement processes have one thing in common—they require the accurate measurement of Cu before effluent discharge into the water system. The treatment of Cu in wastewater is complicated by the fact that Cu is both necessary to the normal functioning of the human body at the right levels and also is toxic to the body at higher than normal levels.      For this reason, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set a Cu maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 1.3 mg/L. The symptoms of over-exposure to Cu in water can include severe nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal issues, muscle pain, anemia, liver or kidney failure and even death.

Anaheim, CA—December 19, 2018—Engineers whose processes and plants depend on high-purity and ultra-pure water will find the new advanced inline NA6 Sodium Analyzer from Electro Chemical Devices (ECD) sets a new industry standard for performance, ease-of-use and economy to protect equipment from corrosion and ensure product quality.

A wide range of sensitive industrial processes and consumer products require high-purity and ultra-pure water.  They range from boiler and turbine corrosion control in electronic power generation to the production of sophisticated semiconductors and microelectronics to life-saving pharmaceuticals and everyday foods and beverages.

ECD’s new Model NA6 Sodium Analyzer features an advanced glass electrode sensor that measures sodium in water to the parts per billion (ppb), parts per million (ppm) or milligram per liter (mg/l) levels.  The sodium sensor’s measurement range of 0.1 to 10 ppb is based on the proven accuracy of ECD’s proven sodium glass electrode sensor for the online potentiometric detection of low ppb traces of sodium.

This ECD sodium glass electrode sensor when exposed to raw process or treated process water produces an electronic signal potential proportional to the log of the sodium concentration. The sample is exposed to a reagent vapor, which raises the sample pH to 11 to eliminate any pH or ammonium interferences that would affect measurement accuracy.  Highly reliable too, reproducibility is ±0.2 ppb or 5%, whichever is greater at constant temperature.

To ensure dependability and safety, the NA6 Analyzer features a dual compartment design.  The wet sample, sensor and reagent are all completely separated in one compartment of the analyzer from the electronics and user-interface display located in the second compartment.  The electronics are always dry and safe from moisture for superior reliability.

For maximum user flexibility by plant technicians, the NA6 features a dual-function design. When in continuous operation, it features a T90 180 sec (0 to 10 ppb) delay time. Its “grab sample” capability also enables the unattended analysis of manually collected samples. The results of external samples are stored in the analyzer’s data logger, which includes time and date stamping information for history logging.   

Ready to go right out of the box, the ECD NA6 Analyzer is easy to install by a single technician in less than 30 minutes with no special training or tools. All that needs to be done is connect the power, the sample line and the reagent lines.   The analyzer is then fully operational.

The NA6 analyzer offers a choice of a manual 1-2 point calibration mode or a 2-point automatic calibration mode. The 2-point automated calibration mode minimizes operator intervention and ensures the most accurate results are obtained.  Free selectable calibration intervals are available too. The results of the last ten calibrations are stored in the analyzer’s internal data logger.

The NA6 Analyzer includes a color touchscreen user interface with multi-lingual capability. It displays measured values and status information in a large easy-to-read format. The design is highly intuitive with full access to menus and functions.  The built-in data logger comes with USB download capability.

Two 4-20 mA data outputs are provided with the NA6 Analyzer, which are compatible with Modbus RTU485 plant control system communications.  Three onboard SPDT relays are programmable to set alarms. The standard power supply is 120/240 VAC, 50/.60 Hz, with an available 24 VDC optional configuration.

The rugged, long-life NA6 Analyzer operates over a wide temperature range from 41 – 122 °F (5 to 50 °C). Ingress protection is IP54 compliant.  For outdoor use, an optional cabinet enclosure is available for harsh weather conditions.

Simple to maintain, the NA6 Analyzer helps reduces plant measurement operating costs.  It features a low-reagent consumption design that minimizes consumables expenses.  There are no-moving parts to break or replace, ensuring a low life-cycle cost as well.

Versatile ECD LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller Offers Total Solution to Disinfection and Water Quality

Selective ion sensors are available to measure: ammonium, bromide, cadmium, calcium, chloride, copper, cyanide, fluoride, lead, nitrate, nitrite, potassium, silver, sodium and sulfide.

The LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller digitally communicates with any ECD intelligent sensor, automatically configuring the controller’s menus and display screens to the measured parameter.  Two-way communication between the sensors and controller provide measurement data for plant process control equipment and systems

The type of sensor, identity and serial number are stored in the sensor’s memory along with calibration registers. Sensors are calibrated at the factory–so they are ready to use when connected, are waterproof and submersible with all internal components epoxy encapsulated inside the housing and have various process fittings and configurations.

The LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller features a large easily viewable color touchscreen display, which is sized at 4.6 (w) -x- 3.5 (h) inches (120 -x- 90 millimeters). The display and interface can be web-enabled with remote monitoring and activation with personal handheld devices and computers with access via the internet.

The LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller’s highly intuitive menu-driven navigation is accomplished using the large touchscreen display. The primary menu selections are the multi-channel main display, single channel detail screen, calibration menu, configuration menu, info screens and simulate menu.

Other display screen capabilities include the hold function, graphical display style, back light and contrast adjustments, labels/tags for naming the transmitter, password protection and a factory default reset. Output screens include setting the digital communications output, setting the 4-20 mA ranges and fault settings, and configuring the alarm relays.

While ECD’s S80 Intelligent Sensors come pre-calibrated from the factory, field calibration adjustments are easily performed with the controller. The LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller’s calibration menu includes an auto calibrate function, a two point calibration, a standardize function and a single point calibration. The controller’s manual calibration function allows previously determined offset and slope values to be entered manually.

For large or complex processes, the LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller can be ganged with multiple units or connected to other ECD on-line analyzers.  Available output options include: eight 4-20 mA outputs, eight configurable relays (for alarm, activated timers, control, and fault), and Ethernet communication.  Data logging capability is available as well

The rugged LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller is available as a 24 VDC or 100/240 VAC powered controller. It is constructed with heavy duty materials suitable for rugged environment requirements and carries a NEMA 4X/IP65 rating for water resistance.  It is suitable for use in temperatures from 15 to130°F (-10 to 55°C).

The compact LQ800 Multi-Channel Controller goes almost anywhere and measures only 17i (W) -x- 11.7 (h) -x- 9 (d) inches (43 (w) -x- 30 (h) -x- 23 (d) centimeters).  It weighs just 20 pounds (9 kilograms), is wall mounted (standard) with optional handrail or stand mounting available and an optional sunshield is available too for high-intensity light locations.

New FM/ATEX Approved FCX80 Free Chlorine Analyzer Designed for Hazardous Area Applications

Anaheim, CA—April 15, 2019—With its advanced plumb and play design, economical reagent-less sensors and rugged construction, the new FCX80 Free Chlorine Analyzer from Electro-Chemical Devices is FM/ATEX/IECEx approved for hazardous area water and wastewater treatment processes in municipal and industrial plants.

The panel mounted FCX80 is a ready-to-use free chlorine analyzer intended for hazardous locations. It is designed to monitor free chlorine in drinking water, rinse water, cooling water or other fresh water samples from 0.05 to 20 ppm chlorine as the standard range or 0.01-5.00 ppm with the optional low range sensor. The FCX80 is compliant with U.S. EPA Method 334.0 for measuring drinking water.

With its FM/ATEX/IECEx approvals, the FCX80 Analyzer’s design is highly resistant to combustible gases that can be present in water treatment areas, which helps prevent explosions and fires that could jeopardize employee safety, plant equipment and the surrounding area.  Such gases have been responsible for serious accidents causing loss of life and catastrophic facility damage.

ECD’s highly intelligent, reagent-free S88 Free Chlorine Sensor includes digital communication capabilities and features amperometric sensing based on polarographic technology relying on gold/silver materials and a PTFE membrane. It operates over a wide temperature range from 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) for use in extreme environments. Response time is T90 in 2 minutes. The only maintenance required is the replacement of its economical electrolyte solution at intervals of up to 12 months.

Free chlorine for disinfection applications exists in solution as a pH dependent ratio of hypochlorous acid (~100% at pH 5) and hypochlorite ion (~100% at pH 10).  Chlorine has been a popular disinfectant for water treatment to ensure public health.  Disease causing organisms such as Cholera, Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever and Dysentery are eliminated with Chlorine, along with slime bacteria, algae and molds that can grow in water storage facilities such as reservoirs and storage tanks.

The FCX80 Analyzer features a plug and play design that incorporates a constant head flow control device, a pH sensor, the free chlorine sensor and the analyzer/transmitter all conveniently mounted on a PVC panel. Technicians simply connect the sample and drain lines, connect the power and outputs and the FCX80 Analyzer is ready to use in less than 30 minutes.

The FCX80 Analyzer is 24-VDC powered and comes with a 128-x-64 pixel LCD display with black graphics and/or type on a grey or white background with an LED backlight.  This easy-to-read display allows parameters to be graphically displayed with a user defined line, bar or gauge style graph.

For ease of plant management, the FCX80 Analyzer is compatible with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems or large distributed control systems (DCS). The standard configuration features two 4-20 mA outputs, three single-pull/double-throw (SPDT) alarm relays and a MODBUS remote telemetry unit (RTU).

ECD Introduces New AQUA Series Of Portable Wastewater Samplers

Ideal for Municipal Sewage Treatment and Storm water or Industrial Organic or Inorganic Wastewater

Anaheim, CA—January 23, 2019—Technicians responsible for municipal or industrial wastewater treatment systems will find that the new AQUA Series of Portable Wastewater Samplers from Electro Chemical Devices (ECD) provides them with a choice of accurate, reliable samplers designed for convenience and with multiple applications in mind.

Municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems are frequently large and complex, which makes it impractical to place fixed analyzers everywhere they might be desirable to ensure water effluent quality.  The reality of this situation becomes especially clear when equipment is malfunctioning in remote areas and analysis needs to be done to resolve unforeseen problems.  That’s where portable samplers prove themselves to be invaluable.

ECD’s new AQUA Series of Portable Wastewater Samplers consists of three models designed to meet a wide range of sampling requirements.  The very small AQUA-COMPACT, the passively-cooled AQUA-COOLBOX and the versatile multi-bottle AQUA-MULTIX provide plant technicians with total sampling flexibility.

The AQUA-COMPACT is ideal when samples need to be pulled and transported between sites or for temporary compliance purposes. The AQUA-COOLBOX with its passively cooled insulation ensures samples are stored at a cool temperature for proper lab analysis. The AQUAL-MULTIX features multiple bottles with a quick “lift-off” design for bottle exchange.

The AQUA Samplers feature an advanced air pump vacuum sampling system, which delivers an extremely accurate, reliable, representative and repeatable sample.  This design eliminates the problems than can exist with other types of sampling techniques.

As with stationary style samplers, the AQUA Samplers support the extraction of samples from either non-pressurized or pressurized effluent pipe sources.  The pressurized pipeline interface accessory is optional and available at a modest cost.

New AQUA Series Portable Samplers

Programming set-up and daily operation of the AQUA Samplers has been designed to be as simple and intuitive as possible for the user. Sample extraction can be time based or triggered by external sources such as flow meters, level sensors, pH meters, PLC’s etc.

The AQUA Samplers can be supplied with a sample temperature monitoring module. With this option the minimum, maximum, average and present sample temperatures can be monitored and displayed.  Additionally all AQUA Samplers can be configured with data logging for downloads to a PC or other devices via the USB connection.

The AQUA Samplers come with a choice of power options.  They can be AC powered:  110, 220 or 230 VAC.   They are available with an external 12 VDC power supply or can be powered via an integral battery that can provide up to 350 samples on a full charge.

Designed for demanding environments, the AQUA Samplers feature a rugged IP55 rating.  They are suitable for use in temperatures from 14 to 122°F (-10 to 50°C).

ECD’sadvanced CA900 Titration Analyzer for alkalinity measurement is so easy to install and start up that a technician can do it in less than 15 minutes.All that is necessary is to perform simple connections of the sample,waste and reagent lines and then power up the factory pre-calibrated analyzer.Wall mounting hardware comes standard with each analyzer, but an optional bench top stand with reagent holder also is available.

With the CA900 Titration Analyzer’suser-friendly menu structure and touchscreen interface.The analyzer also can be web-enabled as a powerful internet of things (IoT) tool for remote monitoring and interfacing with personal handheld devices such as controllers, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and computers.

To determine and maintain water quality, accurately measuring the alkalinity of the water is critical to assess its relationship and impact on pH levels. Titration analysis with the CA900 Analyzer calculates alkalinity by dispensing known doses of a titrant fluid into a reaction cell while monitoring the pH level to its end point.  The analyzer then uses the titrant concentration and amount dispensed to calculate the level of alkalinity measurement.

The CA900 Titration Analyzer typically performs a single alkalinity measurement per analysis cycle.  Its standard program sequence consists of a cleaning cycle, sample acquisition, monitoring of pH, the addition of the titrant fluid, mixing the fluid, calculation of results and data storage.  The desired frequency of analysis between cycles can be easily modified to the requirements of the user’s process.

The versatile CA900 Titration analyzer is designed with up to four different sample lines that can be connected to the analyzer.  Numerous analysis configurations can be easily set up and programmed depending on the specific process control application and/or environmental or other compliance requirements.

Measuring alkalinity levels with ECD’s CA900 Titration Analyzer is especially important for the effective treatment of both municipal drinking water and wastewater, where it can affect the wastewater anaerobic digestion process.Alkalinity in surface water generally results from the presence of calcium carbonate, CaCO3, which has been leached from rocks and soil and then enters surface or groundwater systems.

With a selection of sensors materials and electrode all designed for specific industrial applications, the S88 family of sensors provide long sensor life and lower maintenance cost in many installations that other sensors cannot withstand..

The petrochemical industries require liquid analysis of corrosive fluids, cooling water, rinse waterand other process liquids to protect equipment, ensure quality production and for environmental compliance.  The X80-S88 Analyzer is ideal for monitoring these fluids including: pH as an indicator of sour gas and in overhead crude;  pH, ORP, conductivity and chlorine in cooling tower operation; and pH, ORP, turbidity, DO and various pIONs in wastewater effluent.

ECD’s Model X80 Universal Transmitter is available as either a single or a dual-channel instrument for continuous measurement with standard MODBUS or optional HART digital bus communications and three optional alarm relays.  With its advanced electronics, the modular X80 Transmitter communicates with any Model S88 Intelligent Sensor, automatically configuring the transmitter’s menus and display screens to the desired measurement parameter.

Highly intelligent, the S88 Sensor’s measurement parameter, its identity and serial number are all stored in the S88 Sensor’s memory along with calibration registers for parameter measurements.  These sensors are pre-calibrated at the factory, and so they’re ready to use right out of the box and can be immediately connected to the X80 Transmitters.  The rugged S88 Sensors are waterproof and submersible with all internal components epoxy encapsulated.

The S88 Sensors are the smart sensor choice for a wide variety of applications, including oil/gas production, petrochemical refining, electric power generation, water and wastewater treatment and more. The S88 Sensors feature two universal sensor designs: (1) insertion/submersion or (2) valve retractable with flared end to prevent blow out. The standard S88 Sensors have a rugged 0.75-inch O.D. 316 stainless steel body with a 10-foot (3 meter) cable or an optional waterproof detachable cable assembly.

The X80 Transmitter features a large (2.75-x-1.5 inch) easily viewable 128-x-64 pixel LCD display with three easily switchable main display screens for data, millivolt and graphics. The display comes with a gray background and black lettering for loop powered instruments or with a blue background and white lettering with LED backlighting on 24 Vdc powered instruments.
