Sensors Analyze Sulfide Levels In Municipal Water And Waste Treatment Plants
Municipal water engineers and plant technicians treating water for sulfates and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) will find the new S10 and S17 Sulfide Sensors from Electro-Chemical Devices (ECD) provide advanced instrumentation to help plants and processes operate smoothly and efficiently with lower operating costs.
Sulfates and H2S are often present naturally in ground water in areas near oil fields, coal mines, peat deposits and areas where geothermal activity occurs. They give the water a bitter taste and the odor of rotten eggs that if left untreated makes it unsuitable as a source of municipal drinking water. With proper analysis of sulfide levels and treatment, however, the water can then be made available to the public.
ECD’s advanced S10 and S17 Sulfide Analytical Sensors provide accurate, reliable analysis of sulfide levels that helps ensure proper water treatment. The S10 Sensor is an immersion or an insertion style sensor, and the S17 is a valve retractable style sensor. They are fully re-buildable and feature a 316 stainless steel body that incorporates the sensing element, a temperature module and a signal conditioner with cabling.
Sulfides are also commonly present in sewage and wastewater treatment plants. The S10 and S17’s pIon electrode cartridge measures the activity of “free” Sulfide ions in solution in concentrations from 0.01 to 32,000 ppm over a pH range from 11-14 pH. The pIon can measure Sulfide ions over a wide temperature range of 0 to 80º C.
Both the S10 and S17 Sulfide Sensors utilize ECD’s replaceable electrode cartridges, which can be selected to measure pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and resistivity. These cartridges provide specific solutions for the most demanding measurement requirements, and they are constructed in a variety of configurations and materials to support diverse industries. The application specific sensor cartridges utilize field proven construction materials that are selected for long life and accuracy.
The S10 and S17 Sensors can be integrated with ECD’s C22 Analyzer to provide automatic pH compensation for a total Sulfide measurement system. The C22 Analyzer features ECD’s advanced Multi-Bus architecture. The Multi-Bus design enables customization of up to four inputs and six outputs in a convenient 1/2 DIN NEMA 4X enclosure. Channel comparisons or measurement compensation, configurable conductivity concentration curves, the graphical display of data and PID control on the outputs or up to 8 optional SPDT relays are just a few of the powerful features in this easy to use instrument.
S10 Immersion or Insertion Sensor
The S10 Sensor is designed with a 0.75-inch MNPT compression fitting as the process connection. This construction feature allows a variable insertion length to accommodate installation in pipe tees, flow cells or through tank walls. If the trunk fitting is reversed, the sensor can be installed in a pipe for submersion in a tank.
S17 Retractable Sensor
The S17 Sensor is designed with a 1-inch MNPT ball valve, a 1-x-0.75 inch reducer and a 0.75 inch MNPT compression fitting to provide the process connection. Loosening the compression fitting allows the sensor to side freely through the ball valve for insertion either into the process or retraction from the process. Once the sensor is retracted, the ball valve can be closed and the sensor can be removed for maintenance or replacement without shutting down the process line.
